Early September of this year I had the Pleasure of Interviewing Janet Tuenschel owner of the beautiful Country Cut Flowers in Newmarket Ontario. Janet's farm is absolutely a florists dream!! Her main focus is on pick your own - and her season begins in May with peony and tulips and ends late October until the heavy frost arrives. Her acreage includes rolling hills with a woodland backdrop - vast meadows, lush grouped gardens with a plethora of annuals and perennials bloom in her garden beds.
You cannot visit this farm without being intrigued to cut a beautiful bunch and take them home to enjoy. But that is not all - Country cut flowers operates a subscription program which gives you options to pick for yourself or gift a subscription to a friend or loved one - how lovely is that! Janet only takes on a limited amount of subscriptions per year - so if you want in ...get in early.
You can book a time to cut flowers daily at the farm most days of the summer -
They will provide you a jar and or bucket for your blooms - just bring your own floral snips.
I visited in early September and the Gardens were divine. I saw everlasting groups of Amaranthus, Sunflower's, Black eye Susan, Zinnia, Snapdragons, nasturtium, lisianthus, dahlia, strawflowers, statice dill, fennel, this list is goes on..
You can book the farm for small events - Janet hosts a small amount of wedding ceremony's per year (what a beautiful backdrop it makes) The Farm also hosts floral workshops throughout the year in the charming barn on the property with breathtaking views. The Floral workshops are taught by various local floral designers - you can book these through the website. Janet also hosts winter workshops in the early winter months including wreathmaking an winter arrangements.-
Janet was so kind to offer the barn space up as a perfect spot for me to demonstrate creating a spiral handtied for our viewers with an abundance of blooms cut fresh from the farm the day I visited. I had to restrain myself as I walked the colourful paths and selected some perfect blooms to create with - what an absolute treat!
Many of the varieties will self seed and you can see Mother nature's finest things all working together - such an amazing natural pallet to choose from
it is truly inspiring as a designer to visit this wonderful garden!
You can watch the amazing footage from the farm and see the spectacular gardens for your self in this episode of Blooming through Simcoe County
